Just recently a professor of mine brought to my attention the amazing evolution of coffee. Not the coffee it self but the way it’s served really.

Figure A
Back in the pre-Starbucks-ian era when diners served the best brew (of coffee) and little coffee shops were nothing but little. Coffee was served in a mug; a ceramic container with no lid and a little ring on the side for your finger(s) we call a holder. When you start to sip on your coffee not only could you see it but you can also smell the warm aroma of the roasted coffee beans. Back then when you think warm black coffee, you think mug. An example can be seen in Figure A.

Figure B
Today however, in the AS or Anno Starbucks (after Starbucks) era the way coffee is being served has simply evolved into something very different. It seems that people have forgotten all about those wonderful, lidless ceramic mugs with the ring for your fingers on the side. But instead people have stopped using the mug in favor of the “ceramicless” and “ringless” paper cup (with or without the sleeve). Not only that but when you sip on your overpriced black coffee you smell the plastic lid which smells like…plastic; instead of the amazing aroma of the coffee you’re drinking. Basically, if you tell someone to draw a warm cup of coffee, most likely they’ll draw you an ugly ringless paper cup from Starbucks with a lid on it. Figure B is an excellent example of what I’m talking about.
So next time you sip on your Chai Tea (which is basically tea said twice in two different languages) or on your Cafe au Lait which is coffee with milk think about this. Just take a second, stop and just think about how much better the world would be if coffee was still served in a mug.
