1001 Inventions and the Library of Secrets

My friend was showing me this video on Vimeo made by British director of photography Robin Fox. The idea behind this video is that the Dark Ages was the name given to the time in world which had diseases, lack of innovation, and no social progress at all. Because the westerners were more involved in writing world history, that is why this era was given a name that portrays all the “darkness” that happened. In fact, the Dark Ages in Europe was the Islamic Golden Age of 1001 inventions. After watching this video, you’ll understand how. This short film stars award winning Ben Kingsley, the actor that played the psychologist in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island.

Some CNN Action For You

I was watching CNN yesterday for news about the Chile earthquake and I realized how they like to blow things out of proportion. There was an 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile with hundreds of casualties, and all they were focusing on was this tsunami that never happened in Hawaii just to catch the action live and be the first news station to report it. Felt like they were more hungry for attention on US cable rather than focusing on the real issue, which was the aftermath of the earthquake and how the world is responding to it in the relief aspect. Right after the three feet of water rise in Hawaii, which was nothing compared to the damage that was going on in Chile at the same time, they posted this “Hawaii ‘dodged bullet’ on tsunami”! and until 15 minutes ago, it was the main article on CNN.com.

Next Week: Coldplay @ Foro Sol, Mexico City

After a year and a couple of months of touring, Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” concerts are sadly coming to an end in Mexico. I managed to catch them last summer in Irvine, California, but I definitely did not get enough of their music. Gladly, their next concert is in my region. So I’m gonna head down to Mexico City to catch their last concert, then I’m off to Acapulco! I’ll post some pictures soon. I’m really looking forward :D

The Unbreakable LCD Screen

I don’t think I would hit an LCD screen with a hammer just to test how tough it is. This looks interesting! The screen also bends without any problems. I was looking for information on the developers of the screen, but I couldn’t find any.

Update: I found a website that claims that this screen is a Samsung Development

Low and Behold: The New Porsche Cayenne

That my friends it the beautiful behind of the next gen Porsche Cayenne. 2011 to be specific. Alas Stuttgart has produced a 4×4 worthy of Ali Q’s approval and hopefully of yours as well.

This new German beauty dropped 400 pounds (I don’t like pounds) and apparently Porsche is rolling out a hybrid capable of speeds like 97mph on electric power alone!! Oh and I almost forgot to mention that the new Turbo S houses the power of about 500 horses. Yes 500. This is what we Kuwaitis call an “airplane”.

I applaud you, Porsche.

Foam and Water Guns.. A Symbol For Kuwaiti National Day Celebration?

On February 25th, 1961, Kuwait finally gained its independence from being a British Protectorate after years of negotiations and diplomacy with Britain. On February 26th, 1991, Kuwait was liberated from a brutal invasion and occupation by Iraqi armed forces. The results of the war was more than 1,000 martyrs and more than 600 P.O.Ws who fought for the cause of making Kuwait the free and democratic country it is today. How is the general public celebrating this time? By spraying foam or water on each other, driving around with people sitting on the side of their cars and blasting music out their windows. Is it just me or is that plain rudeness towards all of those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of our country? Imagine the people that sacrificed their lives for Kuwait only knew how we are remembering them. By just having this thought in my head, I have to admit that I am ashamed. I’ll bet you anything that at least a good half of the children aged 7 or younger don’t even have a clue why this celebration goes on. Personally, I see that February 25/26 deserves a much better celebrations. What the government is doing now is simply increasing security and closing roads for a couple of days. There is no initiative on hosting memorable national events for the country as a whole. What’s wrong with simply waving a flag to display nationalism and not bothering anyone around you? If this method of celebration causes countless accidents, why aren’t people getting the message that it is not the proper way of celebrating?

I was looking at other blogs and this is what they had to say about what’s going on during National and Liberation Day:

“بالكويت نحتفل باعيادنا عبر رش فوم (صابون رغوة) على السيارات أو على البشر (بنات أو شباب)وبذلك نكون قد عبرنا عن فرحة عيد الوطن وعيد التحرير .. بعد ذلك يتوجه الشباب الى البقالات أو الى المراكز الاخرى لشراء رغوات أكثر وأكثر … وبهذا يعبر معظم الكويتيين عن حبهم للكويت .. برش الرغوة” Frankom.com

“Although this year I’ve noticed a lot more cops on the roads than the previous years, I don’t think its making much of a difference. Gulf Road is still jam packed and the inside roads parallel to the Gulf Road (like Baghdad Street) are also packed.” - 248am.com

Kuwait il3iz – كويت العز

I know that this video has been out since last summer, but I saved it for a Liberation Day post. This is by far one of my favorite Kuwaiti short films. The powerful words and music perfectly fit the video itself. The people that put this together are unbelievably talented in film and production.

“و كويت اليوم هي كويت الأمس، أرض العزة والكرامة”

Enjoy!

Kuwait is Google Doodle Unique

The “New” Kuwait National Day Google Doodle:

The “Mistake” Kuwait National Day Google Doodle:

Last month, I posted about the Kuwait Google Doodle (logos) incident. Google thought that Kuwait’s National/Liberation Day was in January rather than February, and they posted the Kuwait National Day Doodle a month too early. As a form of an apology, they designed a second doodle for Kuwait that was recently uploaded on google.com.kw. And there you have it, Kuwait is the only country in the world that will have two National Day Google Doodles ever. Let’s hope that the people at Google don’t make another mistake, so the record can be justified in Google history forever!
