Alzebda.com

All the front pages of the newspapers in Kuwait (and some other Middle Eastern countries) in one screen. Great way for people to catch all the headlines at the same time! I just wish they had the full newspaper scanned.

TOMS

Yesterday Aramex delivered the TOMS I ordered, apart from being extremely comfortable and a hot summer item, TOMS is responsible for the ‘One For One’ charity movement.

ONE FOR ONE

TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we’re all about.

Light Writer – iPhone Application

light_writer_2

light-writer_3

I found Light Writer on iTunes last night. Too bad I forgot my iPhone back in the US. I really wanted to give it a try! All you need is a camera that can take slow shutter pictures and obviously an iPhone. You can program the phone to write out whatever you want and there is a list of symbols you can choose from as well.

Getting Kicked Out Of Kuwait Club

I went to take pictures yesterday of the final swim meet at Kuwait Sports Club (نادي الكويت الرياضي). While taking pictures of the swim meet, I realized that I could see the Al-Kuwait vs. Al-Arabi football game from the side windows of the swimming complex. I was told that if I used the back entrance of the swimming complex, I can make it directly to the side of the football field. So I walked to the back entrance and I’m right on the 100 meter running track. I looked behind me and I see the whole crowd. It was kind of intimidating hearing the yelling and seeing the large crowd behind me all of a sudden, but I kept on walking to the field’s corner flag. The second I took off the cover of the lens, some young Kuwaiti photographer comes out of nowhere and gives me this rude tone. He starts yelling like he owns the club. I just ignored and smiled. Knowing he can’t do anything else but yell louder and louder, he decides to call security and tells them I’m not wearing a press jacket. Unfortunately, They showed me the way out of my favorite club. Turns out he sells pictures to newspapers and thought I was competing with him or something like that. On the positive side, we won against Al-Arabi on the football pitch and I was able to get pictures of the swim meet.

Real Life Disney Princesses

jasmine

I stumbled upon these amazing photos taken by Dina Goldstein where Disney Princesses are literally pictured in today’s world. Goldstein took all the famous  fairy tale Princesses and put them in what looks to be a glance of their lives if they were real.

The picture I used above is of Jasmine from Aladdin in what looks like Iraq; I’m only guessing though. Click the jump to view more or click here to go to the official page.

Hello PS3 Slim

ps3_slim

All my fellow Playstation 3 fanatics unite for this one post I am posting today!

We all love the PS3 but I have to admit that it’s ginormous size does get to me; it’s not easy when it comes to transporting the beast from one house to another. Let alone one room to another. This is where the Slim comes in…it’s small and “slim”. The Slim will save you $100 but a price that good comes with a catch..

…you see, the tiny device comes with only 2 USB ports compared to the standard 4. There will be no memory card readers and everyone is rambling on about it not having the ability to play older PS2 games. But the graphics and sounds are still top notch, so no worries there.

Check out the listing on Amazon @ $299.99. Link

Cancelled! — مسلسل صوتك وصل

When I first saw 9ootik we9al (صوتك وصل), I knew that by the second or third day it will not continue to air. They didn’t really say who caused the cancellation of the show or what was the main reason, but all I know is that it caused this big problem with Scope Channel and how they are allowing to air this ‘offensive’ show.

People already criticize politicians amongst themselves, some even on TV and newspapers. Politicians are criticized in every political establishment that ever existed, because whatever action they take, someone will not agree. I also don’t get why this show would be classified as offensive. It was not criticizing the policies or views of the politicians, its simply depicting these individuals in a satirical way which some people enjoy to watch. Where is the crime in that? The judicial system works to solve more important problems and all this fuss is really a waste of time.

Personally, I find this show in the range of average/acceptable. Its sometimes funny and something new out of the typical so called ‘comedies’ they air every year.

Funny thing is my friend got this message on BBM from someone selling the complete show for 50 K.D. It just got cancelled yesterday and it already has a high demand in Kuwait’s “media” black market.

KEMS

banner_ad_2_ar
I was comparing internet prices between the internet providers in Kuwait. First thing I realize is that KEMS forces you to get their one year plan, since there is nothing else you can get. Here’s the price list for their plans (I was looking for something between 2-6 Mbps):
2 Mbps: KD 200
3 Mbps: KD 300
4 Mbps: KD 400
5 Mbps: KD 500
6 Mbps: KD 600

Let’s take the 6 Mbps, which is the same connection I have in the US with at&t for $400 a year (115 KD). It really makes me think if 600 KD ($2100) is really worth it for a 6 Mbps connection in Kuwait? I have no clue why the prices are so high. Is it because companies don’t want too much traffic on the current low capacity internet infrastructure? or are they trying to dry our pockets out? or is it both?

Since June I’ve been seeing these billboards with “KEMS 24 Mbps” and I don’t see anything about that on their website. Even if their was a residential 24 Mbps internet service, with the linear price trend they already have, it should be around KD 2400 for a year. Nice!
