With summer school over, I finally had time to start sailing lessons. Every time I get so close to starting, something has to come in the way and I eventually keep sailing on hold. I have previous sailing experience, but I had no idea where to start with the lessons. While looking for schools and programs, I found the American Sailing Association’s (ASA) licensing certifications. These certifications are divided to teach you all aspects of sailing starting from zero to eventually the ability to sail 50 foot sailboats in most weather conditions. To start, there is the Basic Keel Boat 101 license. After passing that exam, the ASA send you a seal which you have to affix into your sailing log book. From that point, you’ll be able to take different certifications and make your way up to difficult courses such as advanced costal navigation. Unfortunately, there are no licensing centers in Kuwait for sailing due to a lack of interest not only in Kuwait, but the whole region.
What I recommend doing is giving sailing a try with someone who is experienced and can handle a sailboat properly. Learn from that person all the basic maneuvers, then give a try for yourself. If you jump straight into the books, the information won’t make any sense at all. Today, I passed the first and second certifications. I took the pictures in this post throughout the whole lesson yesterday. Luckily, my instructor has his own sailing team and I got to join him in the San Diego Cortez Sailing Competition today. We got second place with a 6 man crew! All the other teams had about 9-12 people on board giving them a greater advantage over us since they had more people handling the running rigging.
Meet Marouane Chamakh, the latest addition to the Gunners’ Squad. Chamakh, a Moroccan national, used to play for Bordeaux and joined Arsenal less than a month ago. With a total of 293 appearances for Bordeaux, Chamakh scored 79 goals during his eight years with the team. One of his career highlights was during his 2008/2009 season, Chamakh scored 14 goals for Bordeaux making them win the Ligue 1 and ending Lyon’s 7 year streak. As of his international appearance, Chamakh represented Morocco 53 times scoring 27 goals.
A 2-2 tie against Barcelona. Almunia played amazingly in the first half, but was coming out too much during the second half. But I wouldn’t blame him at all since he was covering up for Song, who was not marking his spot with Ibrahimovic. If I were to pick a man of the match, it would be between Almunia for his unbelievable performance in the first half, or Walcott for his sprints from the forward right side overtaking the defense a couple of time and scoring a remarkable goal. And finally, Cesc finished it off with a marvelous penalty shot and unfortunately won’t be playing in the next game because of the two yellow cards, a great chance for him to recover his knee (assuming it’s not broken). Arsenal will need a one goal lead in Camp Nou to make it to the next stage.
How exciting! Adrenaline junkie Dirk Auer skated down a 860 meter roller coaster with skates which took him 110 hours to make. ’When I reached the first drop I was 30 metres high and this allowed me to reach speeds of 90kmh on descent’ said Dirk Auer after his exciting stunt. He performed this stunt last summer near Frankfurt, Germany.

The 2010 Winter Olympics are almost halfway done and so far the United States have the highest number of medals, with 14 medals (as of February 18). There are almost 10 days to go with many events that still did not come to an end. My favorite event is the bobsleigh, both two-man and four-man (still did not start). I believe the two-man bobsleigh heat one is suppose to start on February 20th, and the four-man bobsleigh heat one is on February 26th. I couldn’t keep up with the other sports on the live broadcast, but I’ve been watching the highlights online. In Torino 2006, Shani Davis made Winter Olympics history for being the first African American on the speed skating squad and the first African American to ever win a gold medal at the winter olympics. Yesterday, he won another gold! Watch the YouTube link to see more about him:

I went to a Monster Energy Drink Supercross for the first time last week and I must say that I had a blast. I didn’t understand how the event works technically until the end. Aside from the event itself, I didn’t laugh so much in a long time. While watching the event, there were 3 fights, a lot of drunks, and yelling all over the place. When the fights broke out, the audience would literally split into two groups and either support one of the people in the fight or join the fight without even knowing the people that are actually fighting. The drunks were hilarious, they were more excited to see the dirt bike accidents than anything else in the event. So whenever a driver falls off or hits another driver, you’d see them jump on the chairs and yell “YEAH” as loud as they can. It was absolute mayhem and Redneck-ness (even though that word doesn’t exist, I can’t express any differently). Honestly, the sport of motorcross doesn’t excite me much, but it was a good experience I recommend.
Here is the event calendar:
